Reference Signals – LTE 4G vs 5GNR

The main difference between reference signals in LTE 4G and 5GNR is in 5GNR Reference signals are transmitted only when they needed

LTE 4G:

According to 36.211 3gpp Specs 5 types of downlink reference signals and 2 types of uplink reference signals are supported. They are:

Downlink:

1. Cell-specific Reference Signal
2. MBSFN Reference Signal
3. Demodulation Reference Signal
4. Positioning Reference Signal
5. CSI Reference Signal

Uplink:

1. Demodulation Reference signal
2. Sounding Reference signal

5GNR:

According to 38.211 3gpp Specs 3 types of downlink reference signals and 3 types of uplink reference signals are supported. They are:

Downlink:

1. Demodulation Reference Signal
2. Phase-Tracking Reference Signal
3. Channel-state information Reference Signal

Uplink:

1. Demodulation Reference Signal
2. Phase-Tracking Reference Signal
3. Sounding Reference Signal

Note: In addition to LTE 4G reference signals, a new reference signal PT-RS is introduced in 5GNR

This because, since 5GNR operates at very high frequencies so phase noise will be more, to compensate phase noise PT-RS is used

The main purpose of PT-RS is Phase noise compensation
